Denim 101

This section is all about the denim. We’ll tell you a bit of what you can expect when you get your first pair, how to break them in, and a little about how to care for them. Be sure to check out the washing instructions page too.

WHAT IS RAW SELVAGE DENIM?

The word ‘selvage’ means there is a finished edge around the fabric which can only be made on antique shuttle looms. This is an anomaly among most mass produced denim because it is more expensive and time consuming to manufacture. Instead, other manufactures err on the side of cheap & quick – making massive rolls of denim that they then cut to size. Selvage denim is the opposite – it is made by a continuous horizontal “weft” thread that is never cut, granting it a clean and uniform edge and thicker more durable nature. There are only a few looms still around that can make this sort of denim. It is ‘raw’ because it is unwashed, and Sanforized to minimize shrinkage. In short: pristine. This gives the fabric the unique ability to conform to your body over time. Wearing in all the right places.

THE FIT

Your new pair of Noble Denim jeans should be tighter than you expect when you first put them on. Don’t worry, we didn’t miss measure, this is how they are supposed to fit you when they are new. Because they are still in the pristine state – they have a lot of stretching to do. Believe us when we say, they will loosen up in all the right areas after some wear-time. They should be a little tight in the waist, quads and crotch. This is all normal. Take them for a brisk walk, and by time you’re done – you will probably notice the changes begin. BREAKING IN YOUR JEANS

This is the fun part. When you first get your pair of raw denim jeans, they need time to learn your body. So we’re going to tell you a few ways you can give them some love and attention. The first bit of sage advice is the obvious: wear them OFTEN. So often that your friends think you’re inseparable. This will give them knowledge of your lifestyle from sun up to long after the sun has gone down. This mixed with the bold routine of NOT washing them is the best thing you can do to tame your wild jeans.

Beyond that, when you first slide them on (and we think this might go without saying) - do some stretches. The urge will probably hit you anyway, and you won’t rip them (unless you’re some sort of yogi or gymnast with super-human flexibility). We’re talking squats, lunges, butterfly’s, spin-kicks — that sort of thing.
